This lithograph captures his characteristic approach to the subject, where the traditional equestrian motif is stripped of classical heroism. Instead, Marini presents a simplified, almost archaic form that emphasises the tension between the animal and the human figure.

The composition relies on a sparse use of line and colour. The horse is rendered with angular, elongated limbs, while the rider sits with a detached, stoic posture. Marini uses bold blocks of yellow and orange to define the volumes of the horse and the rider's clothing, contrasting with the stark black outlines and the textured, charcoal-like shading in the background. The lack of environmental detail forces the viewer to focus entirely on the interaction between the two figures.

Marini began exploring this theme in the 1930s, but his post-war works often reflect a sense of fragility and existential uncertainty. By reducing the figures to their essential shapes, he moves away from naturalism toward a more symbolic representation. The horse, often seen as a symbol of power or control, appears here as a vulnerable creature, mirroring the rider's own stillness. This print demonstrates Marini's ability to convey complex emotional states through minimal visual information. His work remains a significant example of mid-century European modernism, where the focus shifted from external observation to internalised expression. The print is signed by the artist, reflecting his active engagement with the medium of lithography as a means to disseminate his sculptural ideas into a two-dimensional format.

You might also like

Lovers for Berggruen (The Offering) by Marc Chagall
The Necklace by Massimo Campigli
More by Marino Marini →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Rider-and-Horse_Poster_CompositorV1_1792115388538.jpg?v=1792395332
juggler-marino-marini
Juggler - Marino Marini

A minimalist lithograph by Marino Marini, featuring a fluid, calligraphic depiction of a juggler framed by a bold blue border.

Marino Marini, an Italian sculptor and painter, is widely recognised for his exploration of the human form and the equestrian motif. This lithograph, titled Juggler, displays his characteristic economy of line. The figure is rendered with a singular, fluid contour that defines the body against the stark white background. Marini avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the posture and the tilt of the head to convey a sense of balance and poise. The subject stands on tiptoe, a pose that suggests the precarious nature of a performer.

The composition is framed by a bold, hand-drawn blue border. This frame acts as a graphic element that contains the figure while providing a sharp contrast to the monochromatic drawing. Marini often returned to circus themes throughout his career, finding in the acrobat or juggler a vehicle for studying physical tension and human vulnerability. His approach to printmaking mirrors his sculptural practice, where he strips away the superfluous to reveal the essential structure of his subject.

This work reflects the mid-century European interest in simplified, expressive forms. The line quality is calligraphic, showing the artist's hand and the immediacy of his process. By limiting his palette to black ink and a primary blue, Marini directs the viewer's attention to the silhouette and the negative space surrounding the figure. The print is a study in restraint, capturing a moment of stillness within a dynamic performance. It is a clear example of how Marini utilised graphic media to extend his sculptural investigations into two dimensions, maintaining a consistent aesthetic language across different disciplines.

You might also like

The Necklace by Massimo Campigli
Clown in Love by Marc Chagall

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Juggler_Poster_CompositorV1_1792115431082.jpg?v=1792395350
