The composition features two putti, each mounted upon a lion, supporting the prominent Medici coat of arms. The shield is surmounted by a crown, with the six characteristic spheres of the Medici family arranged in a triangular formation. Below this primary heraldic element, a secondary decorative motif features a lion mask surrounded by acanthus leaves and scrolling foliage.

Della Bella was a Florentine artist who spent a significant period in Paris under the patronage of Cardinal Mazarin. His work often reflects the influence of Jacques Callot, particularly in the clarity of his line and his ability to render small-scale figures with anatomical accuracy. This print demonstrates his skill in combining classical iconography with the ornamental requirements of courtly art. The etching technique allows for fine cross-hatching, which creates a sense of volume in the musculature of the lions and the soft forms of the putti.

The inclusion of the Medici arms suggests this work was produced for a patron connected to the Tuscan court. Della Bella excelled in the production of festival books, cartouches, and decorative designs, which were essential components of Baroque visual culture. The print is executed with a controlled, calligraphic line that defines the contours of the figures and the complex curves of the heraldic shield. The lower section, featuring the lion mask, provides a balanced counterpoint to the more narrative upper portion of the image. This piece offers a clear example of the decorative graphic arts produced in Italy during the mid-seventeenth century, reflecting the period's interest in heraldry and classical motifs.

You might also like

Portrait of Martin Ryckaert - Anthony van Dyck — Anthony van Dyck
Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting - Artemisia Gentileschi — Artemisia Gentileschi

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Two-Putti-Riding-Lions-Holding-the-Medici-Coat-of-Arms_Poster_CompositorV1_1785446771157.jpg?v=1785447149
dedication-page-to-antonio-le-charon-with-coat-of-arms-stefano-della-bella
Dedication Page to Antonio Le Charon, with Coat of Arms - Stefano Della Bella

A fine Baroque etching by Stefano Della Bella, featuring a formal dedication, heraldic coat of arms, and classical ornamental motifs.

This etching by Stefano Della Bella functions as a formal dedication page, a common feature in seventeenth-century print series. The composition is organised around a central coat of arms, which is flanked by allegorical figures and decorative elements characteristic of the Baroque period. Della Bella, a Florentine artist who spent significant time in Paris, was known for his technical precision and his ability to integrate classical motifs with fluid, imaginative forms.

The print features a variety of figures, including putti and satyr-like masks, which frame the Latin inscription dedicated to Antonio Le Charon. The use of line is varied, ranging from the fine hatching used to model the musculature of the figures to the bolder, more sweeping strokes that define the scrollwork and foliage. The inclusion of a coat of arms suggests this work was commissioned for a specific publication, likely a series of prints or a book of engravings, where the patron's status required visual acknowledgement.

Della Bella's approach to the page is highly decorative. Collectors of Baroque prints will recognise the artist's signature clarity and his capacity to render complex allegorical scenes with economy and grace.

You might also like

Portrait of Martin Ryckaert - Anthony van Dyck — Anthony van Dyck
Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting - Artemisia Gentileschi — Artemisia Gentileschi

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Frontispiece-for-La-finta-pazza_Poster_CompositorV1_1785450374217.jpg?v=1785450503
the-funeral-of-ferdinand-ii-the-catafalque-stefano-della-bella
The Funeral of Ferdinand II: The Catafalque - Stefano Della Bella

A detailed 1637 etching by Stefano Della Bella documenting the elaborate catafalque constructed for the funeral of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II.

This etching by Stefano Della Bella documents the elaborate funeral arrangements for Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor, held in Florence in 1637. Della Bella, a Florentine printmaker known for his technical precision, captures the temporary architectural structure erected for the ceremony. The composition centres on the catafalque, a raised platform designed to support the coffin, which is positioned within a grand, vaulted interior space.

The print demonstrates the artist's command of perspective and line. The use of cross-hatching creates depth and shadow, defining the architectural elements such as the columns, the coffered ceiling, and the surrounding balustrades. Figures are scattered throughout the lower register, providing a sense of scale to the monumental structure. The inclusion of heraldic symbols, such as the double-headed eagle suspended above the central area, reinforces the imperial nature of the event.

As a record of ephemeral art, this work provides insight into the Baroque tradition of staging grand public spectacles. The print is executed with a fine, controlled line, characteristic of the artist's output during his time in Florence. It reflects the period's interest in theatricality and the integration of architecture with commemorative display. This etching captures a chaotic scene of three horses in conflict. The composition relies on the tension between the animals, with one horse rearing while another is grounded, creating a sense of kinetic energy. Della Bella uses fine, parallel hatching to define the musculature and the texture of the horses' coats, a technique that provides volume without the need for heavy shading.

The background remains sparse, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the interaction between the subjects. In the distance, smaller figures of horses suggest a larger herd, providing context to the central struggle. Della Bella spent significant time in Paris, where he produced many of his most recognised etchings for the publisher Israel Henriet, whose mark appears on this print. His ability to render animal anatomy with such precision made his work popular among collectors and artists of the seventeenth century.

This print demonstrates the artist's command of the etching needle. Della Bella, a Florentine artist who spent significant time in Paris, was highly regarded for his small-scale prints that often incorporated cartouches, decorative frames, and mythological themes. This particular work functions as a decorative frame, where the human form merges with organic elements.

The composition features two female figures positioned on either side of a central, empty shield or cartouche. Their lower bodies transition into swirling, leafy foliage, while their upper torsos remain human. The artist uses fine, controlled lines to define the musculature of the figures and the texture of the leaves, creating a sense of fluid motion. The figures reach upward, their arms forming the top arch of the frame, which suggests a metamorphosis akin to the myth of Daphne. The lower portion of the design is anchored by a base that integrates further decorative scrolls and naturalistic details.

Della Bella was a master of the etching needle, capable of producing works that were both functional as designs for other craftsmen and aesthetically complete as independent prints. His ability to balance the human figure with ornamental structure is evident here, as the figures do not merely decorate the frame but actively constitute its form. The print reflects the Baroque interest in transformation and the integration of classical mythology into decorative arts. The inclusion of the inscription 'S. Della Bella fecit cum Privil Regis' indicates that this print was produced under royal privilege, a common practice for artists of his standing to protect their work from unauthorised reproduction. The composition features two skeletal figures positioned on either side of a central tree. They appear to be pulling the tree apart, revealing a large, draped cloth that hangs between the bifurcated trunk. The oval frame contains the scene, creating a contained, theatrical space typical of Della Bella's work as a printmaker in Florence and Paris.

Della Bella was a prolific etcher, known for his technical precision and his ability to render fine detail within small formats. Della Bella, a Florentine printmaker who spent significant time in Paris, was known for his technical precision and his ability to integrate naturalistic motifs into decorative frameworks. This work features a central cartouche, a common element in seventeenth-century print culture, designed to frame a coat of arms or an inscription. The upper portion of the cartouche is occupied by a dramatic scene of a bull under attack by two lions, rendered with a sense of movement and tension that contrasts with the static, symmetrical nature of the surrounding scrollwork.

The composition is balanced by the inclusion of a ram skull at the base, a motif that introduces a memento mori element to the design. The surrounding foliage and scrolling forms are executed with fine, controlled lines, typical of Della Bella's etching technique. His work often bridged the gap between functional design for artisans and the aesthetic appreciation of collectors. The print reflects the period's interest in combining classical references with dynamic, animalistic energy. The clear, precise line work allows for the legibility of the complex forms, ensuring that the decorative elements do not overwhelm the central narrative scene. This piece is part of a larger series of cartouches, which were frequently used as models for silversmiths, woodcarvers, and other craftsmen of the era. The artist's signature and the publisher's mark are visible at the base, indicating the print's origin within the commercial print market of the era.

You might also like

Portrait of Martin Ryckaert - Anthony van Dyck — Anthony van Dyck
Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting - Artemisia Gentileschi — Artemisia Gentileschi

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Two-Satyrs-and-a-Satyress-Pouring-Wine_Poster_CompositorV1_1785452316656.jpg?v=1785452420
mirame-scene-from-act-5-stefano-della-bella
Mirame: Scene from Act 5 - Stefano Della Bella

A detailed etching by Stefano Della Bella depicting a theatrical scene from the 1641 play 'Mirame', showcasing Baroque stage design and architectural precision.

This etching by Stefano Della Bella depicts a scene from the fifth act of the play 'Mirame', performed at the Palais-Cardinal in Paris in 1641. Della Bella, a Florentine artist who spent significant time in France under the patronage of Cardinal Richelieu, was a master of the etching needle. His work captures the ephemeral nature of seventeenth-century courtly spectacles, where architecture, costume, and performance merged into a singular visual experience.

The composition is framed by a monumental arch, which serves as the proscenium for the stage. The artist employs precise, fine lines to define the classical columns, the sculptural details of the archway, and the figures gathered in the foreground. The perspective draws the eye toward the centre of the stage, where the characters are positioned amidst a formal garden setting. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of depth, typical of the Baroque interest in theatrical illusionism. The heraldic crest at the top of the arch adds a layer of formal authority, reflecting the political and social context of the performance.

As a document of seventeenth-century stagecraft, this print provides insight into the elaborate set designs of the period. The symmetry of the architecture and the arrangement of the figures suggest a highly controlled, choreographed environment. Della Bella's ability to render the textures of stone, fabric, and foliage with such economy of line demonstrates his technical skill. Created in the mid-seventeenth century, the work captures the theatrical nature of Baroque funerary architecture. The composition centres on a monumental, curved structure adorned with classical columns and allegorical figures. At the base, a cartouche bears an inscription dedicated to the monarch, while the upper section features the royal coat of arms beneath a radiant sun, a motif frequently associated with the French monarchy.

Della Bella, a Florentine artist who spent significant time in Paris under the patronage of Cardinal Richelieu, possessed a refined ability to render complex architectural forms through delicate line work. Della Bella, who spent a significant portion of his career in Paris under the patronage of Cardinal Richelieu and the French court, became known for his mastery of small-scale, highly detailed compositions. This work belongs to a series of ornamental designs, likely intended as models for metalwork, cartouches, or decorative heraldry.

The composition features two serpentine dragons with expansive, textured wings, their bodies intertwined to form a frame around a central, blank shield or cartouche. The etching technique allows for a crispness in the rendering of the dragon heads and the delicate chains hanging from the left side. The inclusion of the inscription 'S. The work captures a complex stage design representing the underworld. Della Bella, a Florentine printmaker known for his technical precision, employs fine lines to construct an architectural setting filled with flames, mythological creatures, and centaurs. The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century stagecraft, utilising a central perspective that draws the eye toward the back of the stage while maintaining a sense of chaotic activity in the foreground.

The print demonstrates the artist's ability to render atmospheric effects through hatching and cross-hatching. As a record of a specific courtly performance, the work offers insight into the elaborate spectacles organised by the Medici family during the Baroque period. Through his precise draughtsmanship, Della Bella preserves the fleeting grandeur of this historical moment, offering a detailed view of the social and artistic conventions of the period.

You might also like

Portrait of Martin Ryckaert - Anthony van Dyck — Anthony van Dyck
Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting - Artemisia Gentileschi — Artemisia Gentileschi

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Festival-Parade-with-the-Gods-Enthroned_Poster_CompositorV1_1785454225537.jpg?v=1785454374
jupiter-stefano-della-bella
Jupiter - Stefano Della Bella

A detailed 17th-century etching of Jupiter by Stefano Della Bella, originally created as part of a mythological playing card series.

This etching by Stefano Della Bella depicts the Roman deity Jupiter, shown in his traditional guise as the king of the gods. The figure is seated upon an eagle, his primary attribute, while brandishing a thunderbolt. The composition is divided into two distinct sections: the upper portion features the dynamic, swirling lines characteristic of Della Bella's printmaking, while the lower portion contains a descriptive text in French, identifying the figure as the son of Saturn and Rhea who claimed the heavens as his domain. A small heart symbol at the base indicates the work's origin as part of a deck of playing cards.

Della Bella was a prolific Florentine printmaker who spent significant time in Paris under the patronage of Cardinal Richelieu. His work is noted for its technical precision and the fluidity of his line. This specific series demonstrates his ability to combine classical iconography with the functional requirements of a card game. The etching technique allows for a high degree of detail in the clouds and the eagle's plumage, creating a sense of movement despite the small scale of the plate. The inclusion of text within the frame serves both an educational and a decorative purpose, typical of seventeenth-century educational games designed for the aristocracy. The print reflects the period's fascination with classical mythology and the systematic categorisation of knowledge through visual media. Della Bella was a master of the print medium, known for his ability to capture texture and form through controlled, delicate line work. In this composition, he presents a horse adorned with an elaborate bridle and plumes, positioned alongside a young man draped in a leopard skin. The oval frame suggests a focus on the portraiture of the figures, isolating them from a broader setting to concentrate on their interaction and the specific details of their attire.

The artist employs a range of hatching techniques to define the musculature of the horse and the soft, patterned texture of the leopard skin. The youth is depicted with a direct gaze, his expression calm and composed. The inclusion of the leopard skin and the ornate horse tack reflects the interest in exoticism and courtly display common in seventeenth-century European art. Della Bella spent significant time in Paris under the patronage of Cardinal Richelieu, where he produced many such prints that combined observation with a decorative sensibility.

As a printmaker, Della Bella influenced the development of etching in the seventeenth century. The precision of the line work allows for the identification of individual ships and the scale of the defensive structures, making it a valuable document for those interested in the history of maritime warfare and the development of European print culture.

You might also like

Portrait of Martin Ryckaert - Anthony van Dyck — Anthony van Dyck
Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting - Artemisia Gentileschi — Artemisia Gentileschi

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Siege-of-La-Rochelle_Poster_CompositorV1_1785455256980.jpg?v=1785455372
departure-of-a-galley-ship-stefano-della-bella
Departure of a Galley Ship - Stefano Della Bella

A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Stefano Della Bella depicting a busy port scene with a large galley ship and figures preparing for departure.

This etching by Stefano Della Bella captures a busy maritime scene, typical of the artist's interest in military and naval subjects. The composition is divided between the foreground, where figures gather on a stone quay to board smaller boats, and the background, where a large galley ship dominates the water. Della Bella, a Florentine printmaker, demonstrates his technical facility through the use of varied line weights and cross-hatching to define form and atmosphere. The composition centres on the Holy Family: Mary sits atop a donkey, cradling the infant Jesus, while Joseph walks alongside, guiding the animal through a wooded area.

The artist employs a delicate touch to render the foliage of the large tree above the figures, creating a sense of shelter and seclusion. Della Bella was known for his small-scale, highly detailed prints, and this work is representative of his ability to imbue a traditional narrative with a sense of quiet observation. Della Bella, a Florentine artist who spent significant time in Paris under the patronage of Cardinal Richelieu and the French court, demonstrates his mastery of the etching needle through this composition. The scene is divided into two distinct registers. In the upper portion, two satyrs play flutes upon a rocky outcrop, while Pegasus stands watch above them, grounding the work in classical mythology. The lower portion features a group of figures in contemporary seventeenth-century dress, dancing around a central easel or placard that bears the Latin inscription 'AETATIS SVAE 31'.

The juxtaposition of the mythological figures with the lively, somewhat grotesque dancers creates a narrative tension typical of the period. Della Bella employs a fine, calligraphic line to define the textures of the foliage, the musculature of the satyrs, and the folds of the dancers' garments. His ability to render light and shadow through varied hatching techniques provides a sense of depth to the woodland setting. The composition is balanced, with the central placard acting as an anchor for the surrounding movement. The inclusion of the publisher's details at the bottom of the plate confirms its function as a book illustration, yet the quality of the execution elevates it beyond mere utilitarian printmaking. This work reflects the artist's interest in theatricality and the intersection of classical themes with the social life of his era. The print captures the energy of the dance while maintaining the technical precision required for high-quality book production in the mid-seventeenth century.

You might also like

Portrait of Martin Ryckaert - Anthony van Dyck — Anthony van Dyck
Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting - Artemisia Gentileschi — Artemisia Gentileschi

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Frontispiece-Dancers-Satyrs-and-Pegasus-_Poster_CompositorV1_1785455845175.jpg?v=1785455966
