Kiitsu was a primary student of Sakai Hoitsu and maintained the school's focus on decorative elegance and natural observation. The composition features deep blue irises rendered with saturated pigments against a muted, neutral silk background. The artist employs a balanced arrangement, placing the floral clusters as the primary subjects while integrating avian figures to provide a sense of seasonal movement.

On the left scroll, a kingfisher rests upon a wooden post, observing the water. The right scroll depicts swallows in flight and perched upon a gentle slope, suggesting the transition of spring into summer. The use of mineral pigments creates a contrast between the intense blue of the petals and the soft, washed tones of the foliage and water. Kiitsu demonstrates a precise control of the brush, particularly in the rendering of the iris leaves, which possess a sharp, rhythmic quality. The scrolls are framed by traditional textile borders, which were standard for high-quality Japanese mounting during this era.

These works reflect the Rinpa tradition of combining stylised naturalism with a decorative sensibility. The absence of heavy outlines allows the forms to emerge through the application of colour, a technique that defines the artist's mature style. By focusing on the specific characteristics of the flora and fauna, Kiitsu captures a moment of quiet observation. The work remains a clear example of the technical skill and compositional balance associated with the Rinpa masters of the nineteenth century.

You might also like

Poem by Fujiwara no Okikaze with Underpainting of Clematis - Shōkadō Shōjō — Shōkadō Shōjō
Orchid Pavilion Gathering in Blue and Green - Tsubaki Kakoku — Tsubaki Kakoku

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Irises-and-Birds_Poster_CompositorV1_1791613382221.jpg?v=1791613686
