Executed in 1770, the work demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of Saint-Aubin, a draughtsman and engraver who occupied a position of note within the French artistic circles of the eighteenth century. The subject is presented in profile, a format that allows the artist to focus on the specific contours of the face and the texture of the sitter's attire.

The composition is contained within a circular frame, surmounted by a decorative bow, which provides a sense of formal enclosure. Saint-Aubin employs a variety of line weights and cross-hatching techniques to render the volume of the subject's features and the soft, fur-lined collar of his coat. The background is filled with a subtle, uniform pattern of horizontal lines, which directs the viewer's attention to the central figure. Below the portrait, the inscription identifies the sitter as a Chevalier of the Holy Roman Empire and an amateur of the fine arts, reflecting his status as a significant figure in the intellectual life of the period.

Saint-Aubin was known for his ability to capture the likeness of his contemporaries with clarity and restraint. This print is an example of his skill in translating the immediacy of a drawing into the permanent medium of an engraving. The work provides a glimpse into the culture of the Enlightenment, where the study of art and literature was a pursuit of the aristocracy and the educated elite. The print remains a record of both the sitter and the stylistic conventions of French portraiture during the late eighteenth century.

You might also like

Charles François Paul Le Normant de Tournehèm - Nicolas Gabriel Dupuis by Nicolas-Gabriel Dupuis
Portrait of a Young Artist, presumed to be Jacques Andre Naigeon by Jean-Honoré Fragonard
More by Augustin de Saint-Aubin →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Charles-Henri-de-Heineken_Poster_CompositorV1_1791883358912-q80.jpg?v=1792399952
