The composition centres on a busy waterway, where various vessels navigate the currents before a distant city profile. Coopse, a specialist in marine subjects, demonstrates a keen eye for the rigging and hull structures of seventeenth-century ships. The foreground features a small rowing boat with two figures, providing a sense of scale against the larger sailing craft that dominate the middle ground.

The technique employs pen and brown ink to define the structural elements of the ships, while grey wash provides depth and atmosphere. The artist uses the wash to suggest the movement of water and the overcast sky, creating a cohesive tonal balance across the paper. The city silhouette in the background remains understated, allowing the focus to stay on the nautical traffic and the interplay of light on the water surface.

Dutch marine art of this period often reflected the economic importance of trade and shipping. Coopse avoids excessive detail, preferring a fluid, observational approach that conveys the daily rhythm of a port. The work is typical of the period's interest in documenting the specific characteristics of different vessel types, from small skiffs to larger merchant ships. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the character of the piece, preserving the original marks of the artist's quill and brush. This print offers a view into the maritime culture of the Netherlands during the seventeenth century, presented with the clarity and technical precision expected of a master draughtsman of the era.

You might also like

Shipping on a Rough Sea by Willem van de Velde the Elder
Twee oorlogsschepen en een jacht by Reinier Nooms
Pieter Coopse artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Druk-bevaren-rivier-voor-een-stadsprofiel_Poster_CompositorV1_1789675329063-q80.jpg?v=1793147538
