The artist employs a technique of black and red chalk, augmented with wash, to define the features of the subject. Lagneau is known for his series of character studies, which often focus on the physiognomy of elderly individuals. His approach is observational, prioritising the texture of skin, the weight of fabric, and the specific posture of a reader.

The subject wears a cap and a garment with a fur-trimmed collar, suggesting a figure of some status or scholarly pursuit. The profile view allows the artist to map the contours of the face, from the bridge of the nose to the folds around the mouth. The spectacles perched on the nose serve as a functional detail, grounding the figure in a realistic activity. The hands, while secondary to the face, are rendered with enough precision to convey the act of holding a small volume.

Lagneau worked during the early 17th century in France, a period when portraiture began to move away from rigid formality toward a more psychological observation of the individual. His drawings were frequently collected by contemporaries who valued his ability to capture human character without idealisation. The use of coloured chalks provides a subtle warmth to the paper, creating a sense of volume and depth that ink alone might lack. This print reproduces the original drawing, maintaining the tonal balance between the dark chalk lines and the lighter wash areas. It is a study of age and intellectual engagement, presented with a directness that remains effective centuries after its creation.

You might also like

Small Grotesque Head by Jusepe de Ribera
Head of a Young Man in Profile with a Gun over His Shoulder by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta
More by Nicolas Lagneau →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Elderly-Man-Reading-a-Book_Poster_CompositorV1_1789530897990.jpg?v=1789531978
