As a Dutch engraver active during the seventeenth century, Bloteling produced numerous works documenting the architectural and garden designs of Italy, often capturing the formal geometry of the Baroque period. The composition focuses on the central fountain structure, framed by dense, stylised foliage that suggests the manicured nature of the villa gardens.

The print employs fine, precise lines to delineate the stone masonry of the fountain, the curved staircases, and the surrounding statuary. Small figures are scattered across the foreground, providing a sense of scale to the grand architecture. The artist uses a restrained palette, typical of period etchings, which allows the viewer to focus on the structural balance and the interplay between the built environment and the natural surroundings. The inclusion of the title at the base, 'Fontana de Dragoni a Tivoli', identifies the specific site, which remains a notable example of Renaissance and Baroque garden engineering.

Bloteling was known for his technical proficiency in printmaking, and this work demonstrates his ability to translate complex three-dimensional spaces into a two-dimensional format. The print reflects the European fascination with Italian antiquities and garden design during the seventeenth century, a time when such images served as visual records for travellers and collectors. The work is presented here as a high-quality fine art print, preserving the original character of the etching process. It offers a glimpse into the historical documentation of European garden design, rendered with the clarity and attention to detail characteristic of the Dutch school of engraving.

You might also like

Views of Huis ter Meer by Hendrik de Leth
Gezicht op een deel van de Grote of Sint-Stevenskerk te Nijmegen by Frans Buffa en Zonen
More by Abraham Bloteling →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Fontana-de-Dragoni-a-Tivoli_Poster_CompositorV1_1789124627650.jpg?v=1789124659
