The piece, titled Lit i llit, translates from Catalan as Bed and Bed. It exemplifies the artist's interest in the materiality of objects and the physical presence of the canvas. Tàpies often incorporated non-traditional materials into his work, moving away from conventional painting techniques to explore the tactile qualities of his subjects.

The composition features a stark, simplified representation of a bed frame rendered in bold black lines against a raw wooden surface. A three-dimensional, sculptural element occupies the centre of the frame, suggesting a human form or a discarded garment resting upon the bed. This addition of physical mass creates a tension between the flat, graphic lines of the frame and the textured, organic shape of the central object. The white markings, including the cross and the letters, appear as graffiti-like gestures, adding a layer of cryptic symbolism often found in Tàpies' oeuvre.

His work frequently addresses themes of mortality, the body, and the mundane reality of everyday objects. By elevating a simple bed to the status of a subject, Tàpies invites the viewer to consider the history and the human traces left behind by such objects. The use of wood as a support provides a neutral, earthy background that allows the black, white, and ochre tones to dominate the visual field. This piece remains a representative example of his mid-career focus on matter painting, where the physical substance of the work is as important as the image itself. The raw, unrefined aesthetic reflects the artist's desire to strip away artifice and engage directly with the fundamental nature of his materials.

You might also like

White Cretto by Alberto Burri
Morfeo I by Richard Bouwman
Antoni Tàpies prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Lit-i-llit-Bed-and-Bed-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125456111.jpg?v=1792294642
