The piece incorporates newspaper clippings, which function as both historical documentation and formal elements within the composition. By layering thick, opaque black paint over portions of the newsprint, the artist creates a dialogue between the visibility of information and the act of obscuration.

The composition is structured around circular motifs drawn in graphite or charcoal, which frame specific photographic images and headlines. These circles draw the eye to particular narratives, such as the imagery of Nelson Mandela, while the surrounding black paint acts as a void, isolating these fragments from their original journalistic context. The physical texture of the paper, showing creases and folds, remains present beneath the paint, adding a tactile quality to the work.

De Goede often employs this method of selective erasure to comment on how media consumption shapes public perception. The juxtaposition of the dark, heavy paint against the fragile, ephemeral nature of the newsprint creates a tension between permanence and the fleeting nature of daily events. The work does not offer a singular interpretation, but rather invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the historical record and the subjective experience of the observer. The inclusion of Dutch headlines provides a specific cultural lens, grounding the work in the European reception of international affairs during the late twentieth century. This piece is a study in the materiality of information, where the act of painting becomes a form of editorial intervention.

You might also like

Pandemie Astraal (World Wide Web) by Kees de Goede
Kees de Goede prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Mandela-Astraal_Poster_CompositorV1_1789264391020-q80.jpg?v=1792978277
