Executed in black and white chalk on blue paper, the work captures a male subject in a bust-length pose, with the head turned three-quarters to the left. The artist employs the blue tone of the paper as a mid-tone, using white chalk to define the highlights on the face and hair, while black chalk provides the structural shadows and contours.

Arenius, who spent a significant portion of his career in the Netherlands, was influenced by the prevailing European portrait styles of his time. His approach here is direct and observational. The lines are deliberate, focusing on the anatomy of the face and the soft texture of the hair. The inscription in the upper right corner, 'O: Arenius ad viv: del: M.DCCXXX', confirms the work was drawn from life, a common practice for artists seeking to capture the character of a sitter before committing to a final oil painting.

The composition is minimalist, stripping away background detail to focus entirely on the subject. This choice directs the viewer to the expression of the sitter, whose gaze is directed away from the viewer. The use of chalk allows for a fluidity that is less rigid than oil paint, providing a sense of immediacy. This piece offers a glimpse into the preparatory methods of an artist working within the Rococo period, where the study of the human form remained a primary concern. The preservation of the blue paper adds a subtle atmospheric quality to the drawing, which remains a fine example of Arenius's draughtsmanship.

You might also like

Portret van Engelbert Michael Engelberts by Willem Jodocus Mattheus Engelberts
A Young Woman Buying a Pink from a Young Man by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Mansportret_-buste-het-hoofd-driekwart-naar-links_Poster_CompositorV1_1789573187530-q80.jpg?v=1792838141
https://www.solisprints.com/en-nz/products/mansportret-buste-het-hoofd-driekwart-naar-links-olof-arenius
