She holds a tray containing a stack of waffles, a common street food of the period. The work is based on a design by the Dutch painter Herman Frederik Carel ten Kate (1822-1891), a figure known for his genre paintings and historical scenes. The inscription 'naar H. ten Kate' at the bottom left confirms this derivation.

The composition focuses on the figure, who is captured in a moment of daily activity. Her clothing, including the cap and apron, reflects the regional dress often documented by nineteenth-century artists interested in folk traditions. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the textures of her garments and the architectural details of the door frame. The shading is subtle, relying on cross-hatching to create volume and depth within the figure.

Lithography allowed for the mass reproduction of such genre scenes, making them accessible to a wider audience during the mid-to-late nineteenth century. This print captures a quiet, domestic narrative, typical of the period's interest in the lives of ordinary people. The background is kept minimal, ensuring the viewer's attention remains on the girl and her wares. The work provides a glimpse into the visual culture of the Netherlands, where the depiction of local customs and trades was a popular subject for both painters and printmakers. The clean, monochromatic aesthetic makes this piece suitable for various interior styles, offering a historical perspective on Dutch social life.

You might also like

Man luisterend aan een deur by Gerhardus Fredericus Eilbracht
L'Ermite (The Hermit) by Louis Hersent

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Meisje-met-wafels-bij-een-deur_Poster_CompositorV1_1791869938163.jpg?v=1791870193
https://www.solisprints.com/en-nz/products/meisje-met-wafels-bij-een-deur-nederlandsche-maatschappij-van-schoone-kunsten
