Born in London to Flemish parents, Jonson van Ceulen spent much of his career in England before returning to the Netherlands. His work is known for a precise, refined approach to portraiture that balances formal dignity with a sense of individual presence.

The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view, wearing the characteristic attire of the seventeenth century, including a plain, wide collar. The artist uses red and black chalk to build volume and texture, particularly in the rendering of the facial features and the folds of the garment. The handling of the light suggests a controlled studio environment, where the focus remains on the sitter's expression and the subtle play of shadow across the face.

Unlike the more dramatic chiaroscuro favoured by some of his contemporaries, Jonson van Ceulen maintains a clarity of line and form. The drawing exhibits a disciplined application of media, where the paper tone is integrated into the overall composition to provide mid-tones. This study offers an insight into the preparatory process of a painter who was highly sought after by the English aristocracy and gentry for his ability to produce likenesses that were both accurate and composed. The work reflects the broader aesthetic of the period, which prioritised a sober, realistic depiction of the sitter. It remains a fine example of the draughtsmanship that underpinned the formal portraiture of the Dutch Golden Age.

You might also like

Self-Portrait in an Oval by Arnold Boonen
Boy in Profile, facing left by Salomon de Bray

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-a-Man_Poster_CompositorV1_1789627411666.jpg?v=1789627982
