The artist, Esme de Boulonois, employs a precise linear technique characteristic of seventeenth-century printmaking. The subject is shown in a three-quarter profile, his gaze directed slightly away from the viewer. The composition focuses on the facial features and the voluminous, flowing beard, which serves as the primary visual anchor of the portrait. The artist uses varied hatching patterns to define the contours of the face and the texture of the hair, creating a sense of volume within a two-dimensional plane.

Giovan Battista Gelli (1498-1563) was a figure of the Florentine intellectual circle, known for his dialogues and translations. This print captures his likeness with a gravity typical of scholarly portraiture from the period. The background consists of horizontal lines, which provide a neutral setting that prevents distraction from the subject. The inscription at the base, 'BAPTISTA GELLIVS PHILOSOPHVS', identifies the sitter and reinforces his status as a man of letters. The signature 'Esme de Boulonois fecit' appears in the lower right corner, confirming the authorship of the print. This work is an example of the portrait series common in the early modern era, intended for inclusion in biographical collections or as standalone prints for collectors of historical figures. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition demonstrate the technical skill required to translate painted or drawn portraits into the medium of engraving for wider distribution.

You might also like

Portret van Conrad Lycosthenes by Johann Franck
Portret van Hadrianus Junius by Cornelis Koning

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Giovan-Battista-Gelli_Poster_CompositorV1_1791791901247-q80.jpg?v=1792627363
