The composition follows the conventions of late eighteenth-century commemorative portraiture, presenting the figures within a circular medallion that rests upon a pedestal. This arrangement mimics the appearance of a sculptural monument, a common device used to convey gravity and historical permanence during the period of the French Revolution.

The figures are rendered with fine, precise lines characteristic of the etching and engraving techniques employed by Strunck. Marie Antoinette occupies the centre of the medallion, flanked by her children, while Louis XVI appears to her right. The pedestal below the medallion features a small, inset scene depicting a building, which adds a layer of architectural detail to the overall design. The work reflects the political climate of the 1790s, when images of the royal family were produced for various audiences, ranging from sympathetic supporters to those documenting the shifting political order.

Strunck, active in the Netherlands, was known for his technical proficiency in printmaking. His work here demonstrates a careful balance between the portraiture of the royal subjects and the decorative elements of the pedestal. The print serves as a historical document, capturing the iconography associated with the Bourbon monarchy during a period of extreme instability. The clean lines and controlled shading provide a clear, legible image that prioritises the identification of the royal figures. This print is a representative example of the graphic arts produced in Europe during the late eighteenth century, where portraiture was frequently used to disseminate the likenesses of public figures to a wider audience.

You might also like

Portrait of Louis XVI by François-Séraphin Delpech
Archduchess Maria Antonia of Austria by Joseph Ducreux

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portret-van-koning-Lodewijk-XVI-en-zijn-familie_Poster_CompositorV1_1789628304132.jpg?v=1789628987
https://www.solisprints.com/en-nz/products/portret-van-koning-lodewijk-xvi-en-zijn-familie-jacob-willem-strunck
