The composition draws upon the traditions of religious iconography, yet it carries the distinct stylistic hallmarks of the French Rococo period. Fragonard employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define the muscular form of the saint, who is seated amidst a rocky, rugged environment. The presence of a lion, the traditional attribute of Saint Jerome, is subtly integrated into the lower right of the scene, while ethereal figures appear within the clouds above, suggesting a vision or divine intervention.

Fragonard is primarily known for his paintings of courtship and leisure, but his graphic work reveals a different facet of his technical ability. This print demonstrates his capacity for dramatic light and shadow, using dense cross-hatching to create depth and texture within the rocky terrain. The artist captures a sense of movement and spontaneity in the figures, a quality that defines much of his output during his time in Italy. The etching process allows for a degree of freedom in the line work, which contrasts with the more formal religious depictions of the era. The work reflects the artist's interest in the Old Masters, particularly the influence of Rembrandt, whose etchings were studied by many French artists of the eighteenth century. The print serves as a study of human anatomy and emotional expression, rendered with a light, energetic touch that avoids the heaviness often associated with religious subjects of the time. The paper shows signs of age, consistent with an authentic historical print, providing a tactile quality to the visual experience of the work.

You might also like

Holy Family with Putti - Jean-Claude-Richard de Saint-Non by Jean-Claude Richard de Saint-Non
Rest of the Virgin by Johann Georg Wille
Jean-Honoré Fragonard prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Saint-Jerome_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125723832.jpg?v=1792398687
