Executed in 1618, the work follows the conventions of early seventeenth-century portraiture, presenting the artist within an oval frame inscribed with his name, profession, and age. Strauch is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a stiff, pleated ruff that was characteristic of the period. He holds a painter's palette in his hand, identifying his trade to the viewer.

The technical execution demonstrates the precision typical of German printmaking during this era. The artist employs varied hatching and cross-hatching to define the contours of the face, the texture of the beard, and the folds of the clothing. The surrounding oval frame is set against a rectangular background filled with fine, horizontal lines, providing a sense of depth and focus on the subject. The inclusion of coats of arms in the upper corners adds a layer of heraldic detail, while the Latin inscription at the base provides a personal reflection on his craft and the nature of artistic reception.

Strauch was a prominent figure in the artistic life of Nuremberg, known for his portraits and city views. This self-portrait functions as both a record of his appearance and a professional statement. The clarity of the line work and the careful attention to the sitter's expression reflect the standards of the time, where portraiture served to document status and identity. The print is a clear example of the intersection between personal branding and technical skill in the early modern period. It offers a direct look at the individual behind the work, capturing the gravity and professional pride of a seasoned painter.

You might also like

Portret van Johann Götz - Johann Alexander Böner by Johann Alexander Boener
Portret van Johann Sauer by Christoph Melchior Roth

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Self-Portrait-of-Lorenz-Strauch_Poster_CompositorV1_1791772896186-q80.jpg?v=1792486435
