Executed in 1875, the work captures the building with precise attention to its structural features, including the stepped gables, the ornate tower, and the rhythmic arrangement of the pointed-arch windows along the facade. The artist employs a delicate line to define the stonework and the verticality of the tower, which dominates the composition.

Beyond the architectural subject, the drawing includes small, gestural sketches of figures to the right of the main structure. These studies of people in period dress provide a sense of scale and suggest the artist's interest in documenting the daily life surrounding such civic monuments. The composition remains open, with the surrounding environment suggested through light, sparse lines that allow the primary subject to remain the focus of the viewer's attention. The signature and date, located in the lower right corner, confirm the location and the year of production.

De Haas Hemken was known for his interest in historical buildings and urban scenes, often documenting the character of Dutch towns during the nineteenth century. This drawing functions as a record of the town hall's appearance, reflecting a period when artists frequently turned to national heritage for their subject matter. The technical execution demonstrates a high level of control, with the graphite lines varying in weight to suggest shadow and depth without the use of heavy shading. The work is a clear example of the documentary approach to architectural drawing, where accuracy and observational detail take precedence over atmospheric effects.

You might also like

Gothic Church Exterior with Figures - Huib van Hove Bz by Hubertus van Hove
Interior of a Gothic Church by Day - Pieter Neeffs the Elder by Pieter Neefs the Elder
Willem de Haas Hemken prints →
