By applying his signature Pop Art vocabulary to this classical genre, he deconstructs the domestic scene into a series of graphic signs. The composition features a dossier resting on a table, a chair, and a window with blinds, all rendered through his characteristic use of thick black outlines and Ben-Day dots or diagonal hatching.

Lichtenstein removes the painterly texture associated with traditional still life, replacing it with a flat, mechanical aesthetic. The diagonal lines create a sense of texture and shadow, yet they remain strictly two-dimensional. This approach forces the viewer to consider the image as a constructed object rather than a window into a real space. The limited, cool-toned palette emphasises the graphic nature of the work, stripping away the emotional weight often found in the genre to focus on the formal properties of line and pattern.

This work reflects the artist's interest in the history of art, specifically how modern mass-media techniques could be used to reinterpret historical subjects. By isolating everyday objects like a dossier or a chair, Lichtenstein elevates mundane items to the status of fine art, while simultaneously questioning the authenticity of the image itself. The precision of the lines and the deliberate arrangement of shapes demonstrate his control over the visual field. It is a calculated exercise in style, where the subject matter serves primarily as a vehicle for his exploration of graphic representation and the mechanics of perception.

You might also like

Still Life: Autumn Fashion by Patrick Caulfield
Trichromatic Flower Piece by Richard Hamilton
More by Roy Lichtenstein →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Still-Life-with-Dossier_Poster_CompositorV1_1792126946150.jpg?v=1792289629
