Hokuei, a prominent figure in the Osaka school of printmaking, specialised in yakusha-e, or actor portraits. These works were produced for a discerning audience in the Kamigata region, often commissioned by theatre enthusiasts to commemorate specific performances.

The composition focuses on the actor's dramatic posture and the elaborate textile design of his costume. The kimono features a swirling, monochromatic pattern punctuated by bold, flame-like red motifs, which draw the eye across the figure. The actor holds a folding fan, a common prop in kabuki theatre, while his expression remains stern and focused. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper portion of the print provides context regarding the play and the performer, a standard feature in ukiyo-e portraiture that integrates literature with visual art.

Technically, the print demonstrates the refined carving and printing standards of the Osaka school. The lines are precise, defining the contours of the actor's face and the folds of his heavy garments. The colour palette is restrained, relying on a base of grey and white with strategic applications of red and blue to create visual tension. This print offers a glimpse into the theatrical culture of the Edo period, documenting both the fashion of the time and the stylised performance techniques of the kabuki stage. The work reflects the specific aesthetic preferences of the Osaka print market, which favoured a more realistic approach to actor likenesses compared to the more idealised portraits often found in Edo-based prints of the same era.

You might also like

The Actor Nakamura Takesaburo I as Kewaizaka no Shosho - Torii Kiyonobu I by Torii Kiyonobu
Iwai Hanshirō IV as a Woman with a Sword - Katsukawa Shunei by Katsukawa Shun'ei
Shunbaisai Hokuei artwork →

https://www.solisprints.com/en-nz/products/the-actor-nakamura-utaemon-iv-as-the-wrestler-iwakawa-jirokichi-shunbaisai-hokuei
