untitled-woman-by-the-iris-pond-kajita-hanko
Untitled (Woman by the Iris Pond) - Kajita Hanko

A serene woodblock print by Kajita Hanko depicting a woman sculpting a bust in a quiet studio setting.

This woodblock print by Kajita Hanko captures a quiet moment of artistic creation. A woman, dressed in a simple white garment, sits in profile as she works on a sculptural bust. Her posture is focused, with her hands poised near the face of the clay or plaster figure. The bust itself is rendered in muted, earthy tones, contrasting with the soft, clean lines of the artist's figure.

Behind the artist, a vase filled with yellow flowers adds a touch of colour to the composition. The background is sparse, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the interaction between the sculptor and her subject. The print reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the early twentieth-century Japanese art scene, where traditional woodblock techniques met modern subject matter. Hanko, a painter and printmaker, was known for his ability to convey mood through subtle gestures and clean, deliberate lines.

This work avoids excessive detail, opting instead for a balanced arrangement of forms. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft whites, muted greys, and the bright yellow of the flowers to guide the eye. The composition is structured around the diagonal created by the artist's arms and the bust, creating a sense of movement within the stillness of the studio. The print is an example of the period's interest in depicting daily life and the creative process, rendered with the precision characteristic of the Shin-hanga movement. It offers a glimpse into a private, creative space, presented with a calm, observational quality.

You might also like

Young Woman Looking at a Pot of Pinks by Suzuki Harunobu
An Old Man Leaning on a Staff by Katsushika Hokusai
Kajita Hanko artwork →
