Commissioned by the German merchant Anton Kolb and designed by Jacopo de' Barbari, this woodcut consists of six large blocks joined to form a singular, expansive perspective of the city. It represents a shift in how urban spaces were documented, moving away from symbolic or schematic representations toward a bird's-eye view that prioritises geographical accuracy and architectural detail.

The composition captures the city from an elevated vantage point, allowing the viewer to observe the layout of the canals, the density of the housing, and the placement of major religious and civic buildings. The level of precision is remarkable for the period, as it documents the city's structure with a degree of fidelity that remains useful to historians today. The print includes allegorical figures in the clouds, such as Mercury and Neptune, which reflect the contemporary belief in Venice as a city protected by the gods and a maritime power of immense reach.

Technically, the work demonstrates the capabilities of the woodcut medium at the turn of the sixteenth century. The lines are fine and controlled, allowing for the depiction of individual rooftops, ships in the lagoon, and the textures of the water. Because of its size and the complexity of the carving, the production of this map required significant resources and collaboration between the publisher and the artist. It remains a primary source for understanding the urban fabric of Venice before the major architectural changes of the later centuries. This print offers a clear window into the Renaissance fascination with perspective, measurement, and the systematic documentation of the physical world.

You might also like

Map of Siena by Francesco Vanni
Plattegrond van Rotterdam (deel rechtsonder) by Romeyn de Hooghe

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/View-of-Venice_Poster_CompositorV1_1790583337320-q80.jpg?v=1792792244
