This work exemplifies the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. The subject stands before a plum tree, her figure framed by the dark, gnarled branches that suggest a nocturnal setting. The artist employs a muted colour palette, allowing the subtle yellow of the plum blossoms to provide a gentle contrast against the grey background.

The woman wears a kimono featuring a bold, geometric striped pattern, which contrasts with the softer, organic forms of the plum tree. Her head is covered by a hood, a common stylistic choice in Eisen's work to evoke a sense of mystery or seasonal chill. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the figure mirrored by the upward reach of the branches. Eisen's line work is precise, defining the folds of the fabric and the texture of the tree bark with clarity.

As a practitioner of the ukiyo-e tradition, Eisen contributed to the popularisation of prints that captured the fashion and atmosphere of urban life in Edo. This print demonstrates his ability to integrate human subjects with natural elements, a recurring theme in Japanese art. The woodblock printing process is evident in the flat areas of colour and the distinct outlines that characterise the medium. This print offers a view into the aesthetic preferences of the early nineteenth century, where the interplay between pattern and form was highly valued. The work remains a representative example of the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour layer was applied with careful registration to achieve the final image.

You might also like

Stylish Amusements of the Four Seasons by Kitagawa Utamaro
Three Women Standing on the Seashore by Kitao Masanobu
More by Keisai Eisen →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Woman-by-Plum-Tree-at-Night_Poster_CompositorV1_1790958258406-q80.jpg?v=1792594921
