1-2-3-4-in-weiss-max-bill
1+2+3+4 in weiss - Max Bill

A precise example of Concrete Art by Max Bill, featuring a geometric arrangement of primary coloured lines on a white field.

Max Bill was a central figure in the development of Concrete Art, a movement that prioritised mathematical precision and the autonomy of visual elements over representational imagery. In this work, Bill explores the relationship between colour, line, and the white field of the canvas. The composition is structured by a cross-axis, where thin, parallel bands of primary colours intersect.

The title, 1+2+3+4 in weiss, refers to the numerical progression of the coloured lines. Bill employs a rigorous logic, where the number of lines corresponds to the mathematical sequence, creating a sense of order within the pictorial space. The white background is not merely a void, but an active component that defines the limits and the placement of the coloured elements. By stripping away narrative or emotional content, Bill invites the viewer to engage directly with the physical properties of the painting.

This piece reflects the artist's background in architecture and industrial design, fields where clarity and function are paramount. The lines do not cross in a traditional sense, but rather shift in their arrangement, suggesting a system that exists beyond the frame. The use of a limited palette of red, blue, yellow, and green against a stark white ground creates a visual tension that is both balanced and precise. Bill's approach to painting was often described as an extension of his work in sculpture and typography, where the goal was to create objects that possess their own reality. This print captures the clean lines and the deliberate, calculated placement of colour that defined his career, offering a clear example of the mid-century European approach to non-objective art.

You might also like

Composition by Sophie Taeuber-Arp
Rhythmische Teilung by Richard Paul Lohse

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/1-2-3-4-in-weiss_Poster_CompositorV1_1792121634628.jpg?v=1792205005
