The work depicts a young woman positioned at a keyboard instrument, known as a virginal, within a domestic interior. Her gaze is directed toward the viewer, creating a sense of immediate presence. The composition includes a viola da gamba resting in the foreground, which adds a musical theme to the scene. On the wall behind the figure hangs a painting of a procuress, a common motif in Dutch genre art that often carried moralising connotations regarding courtship and music.

Vermeer employs his characteristic handling of light, which enters from the left to illuminate the subject and the textures of her blue silk dress. The artist uses a refined application of paint to define the marble-like surface of the virginal and the subtle shadows cast across the room. The floor features a black and white chequered pattern, a frequent element in his interiors that provides a sense of spatial depth. The signature of the artist is visible on the wall near the top right corner of the canvas.

This painting is one of two works by Vermeer that feature a virginal, the other being A Lady Standing at a Virginal. Both pieces demonstrate the artist's interest in the quiet, private lives of the Dutch middle class. The inclusion of the viola da gamba and the painting within the painting suggests a narrative of leisure and social interaction. The work is currently held in the collection of The National Gallery in London. It remains a primary example of the artist's ability to capture stillness and light within a confined space, reflecting the technical precision associated with his late period.

You might also like

Concert by Pieter de Hooch
A Musical Party by Gerbrand van den Eeckhout
Johannes Vermeer artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/A-Lady-Seated-at-a-Virginal_Poster_CompositorV1_1791953404841.jpg?v=1791953435
