abiding-nowhere-the-awakened-mind-arises-muso-soseki
Abiding nowhere, the awakened mind arises - Musō Soseki

A meditative Zen calligraphy piece by Musō Soseki, featuring the phrase Abiding nowhere, the awakened mind arises, rendered in expressive ink brushwork.

This work is a fine example of Zen calligraphy, executed by the monk and garden designer Musō Soseki. The characters translate to the phrase, Abiding nowhere, the awakened mind arises, a concept derived from the Diamond Sutra. In Zen practice, this calligraphy functions as a visual meditation, capturing the spontaneity and directness associated with the Rinzai school of Buddhism.

The brushwork displays the characteristic vigour of the period. The ink application varies in density, showing the speed and pressure of the brush against the paper. The composition is balanced, with the vertical columns of characters creating a sense of rhythm and movement. The ink is applied with a confidence that reflects the practitioner's state of mind during the act of writing. Unlike formal script, this style prioritises the expression of the inner self over technical perfection.

Musō Soseki was a figure of considerable influence in the Muromachi period, known for his contributions to both spiritual life and the design of temple gardens. His calligraphy is often associated with the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, which finds beauty in simplicity and the passage of time. The aged paper provides a neutral background, allowing the black ink to command the viewer's attention. This piece is suitable for those interested in the intersection of philosophy and visual art, offering a quiet addition to a space intended for reflection or study. The print captures the texture of the original ink and the subtle variations in the paper surface, maintaining the integrity of the historical object.

You might also like

Bamboo in the Wind - Yi Jeong — Yi Jeong
A Gatha (Contemplative Verse) by Fu Daishi - Bankei Yōtaku — Bankei Yōtaku

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Abiding-nowhere-the-awakened-mind-arises_Poster_CompositorV1_1791616086346.jpg?v=1791616421
