The piece features bold, expressive ink characters set against a muted blue-grey paper ground, which is decorated with subtle gold-leaf floral motifs. The juxtaposition of the fluid, dark ink strokes with the metallic shimmer of the background creates a balanced visual tension.

Konoe Nobutada was known for his distinct style, which departed from the more rigid, formal scripts of his predecessors. His brushwork displays a sense of spontaneity and individual character, reflecting the aesthetic values of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The characters are arranged with a focus on rhythm and spatial harmony, typical of the high-level literary culture maintained by the imperial court. The gold-leaf application, likely depicting chrysanthemums or similar seasonal flora, provides a decorative layer that does not overwhelm the primary calligraphic content.

As a master of both Japanese and Chinese literary forms, Nobutada utilised this album to demonstrate his command over classical poetic traditions. The physical presentation, with its careful mounting and integration of text and decorative paper, suggests it was intended for an audience of connoisseurs. This print captures the specific texture of the original paper and the varying density of the ink, allowing for a close examination of the artist's hand. It is a representative example of the intersection between aristocratic literary practice and the decorative arts of the period, offering a glimpse into the sophisticated cultural life of the Japanese elite during a time of significant political transition.

You might also like

One Hundred Comic Poems of the Flower - Totoya Hokkei — Hokkei
Poetry Slips - Katsukawa Shun'ei — Katsukawa Shun'ei

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Album-of-Japanese-and-Chinese-Poems-to-Sing_Poster_CompositorV1_1790837244553.jpg?v=1790838160
