Kiyonaga is recognised for his tall, graceful figures and his ability to organise complex multi-sheet compositions. In this triptych, the artist arranges a series of boats to create a sense of depth and spatial continuity across the three panels. The scene captures actors and their companions enjoying a leisure excursion, a popular pastime in eighteenth-century Tokyo.

The composition relies on the interplay between the architectural elements of the boats and the relaxed postures of the figures. Kiyonaga uses thin, controlled lines to define the garments and facial features, maintaining a balance between the foreground activity and the river setting. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted pigments that were characteristic of the period. The figures are depicted with a sense of ease, reflecting the social atmosphere of the floating world.

Kiyonaga was a master of the bijin-ga genre, yet his work often extended into theatrical and genre subjects. This print demonstrates his skill in managing large groups of people without cluttering the visual field. The arrangement of the boats provides a natural frame for the interaction between the individuals, guiding the eye across the scene. By focusing on the daily lives of the urban population, Kiyonaga provides a view into the social customs of the time. The print remains a clear example of the technical precision achieved by Japanese printmakers during the late eighteenth century, showcasing the development of the multi-sheet format in woodblock printing.

You might also like

Yugasan in Bizan Province - Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige
Throwing the Shuttle - Suzuki Harunobu — Suzuki Harunobu

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/An-Actors-Boating-Party-on-the-Sumida-River_Poster_CompositorV1_1790914358770.jpg?v=1790915210
