The text outlines a proposal to create a lending library for the men employed within Cubitt's establishment. It details the practical logistics of the project, including the initial investment of one hundred pounds by Cubitt, the weekly subscription fee of one penny, and the intended scope of the collection, which was to focus on arts, sciences, history, and biography.

As a piece of nineteenth-century ephemera, the document provides insight into the paternalistic yet progressive attitudes toward worker education during the industrial era. The typography is clean and functional, typical of mid-Victorian commercial printing, designed for clarity and immediate communication to the workforce at the Thames Bank office. The document captures a specific moment in the history of labour relations and the development of self-improvement institutions for the working class in London.

George Barclay, operating from Castle Street, Leicester Square, was a printer responsible for various commercial and administrative documents of the period. This specific broadside is preserved in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, reflecting its value as a record of social history. The print is presented here as a high-quality reproduction, maintaining the original layout and the stark, utilitarian aesthetic of the Victorian printing press. It is an appropriate acquisition for those interested in architectural history, the history of literacy, or the social conditions of nineteenth-century London.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Announcement-of-the-Establishment-of-a-Lending-Library-by-Thomas-Cubitt_Poster_CompositorV1_1791877313685.jpg?v=1791877435
https://www.solisprints.com/products/announcement-of-the-establishment-of-a-lending-library-by-thomas-cubitt-george-barclay
