The artist, Shigenao, captures the actor in a dynamic, mid-action pose, characteristic of the Kamigata-e style originating from the Osaka region. The figure is shown in a crouched stance, gripping a sword, with his expression conveying the tension of a dramatic stage moment. The composition is defined by the contrast between the actor's striped costume and the surrounding environment.

Rain is rendered through fine, vertical lines that descend across the entire image, creating a sense of atmosphere and movement. Behind the actor, a large stack of straw provides a textural element, while the ground is suggested with minimal detail. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted earth tones, blacks, and whites, which allows the focus to remain on the actor's posture and the graphic quality of the print. The actor's face is painted with the stylised makeup typical of the period, and his hair is arranged in a traditional topknot.

Prints of this nature were produced to commemorate specific theatrical performances, often serving as souvenirs for theatre-goers. The technical execution demonstrates the precision of the woodblock carving process, particularly in the rendering of the rain and the fabric patterns. This work offers a glimpse into the theatrical culture of nineteenth-century Japan, where the fame of kabuki actors was disseminated through such visual media. The print is a representative example of the focus on individual characterisation within the Ukiyo-e tradition, prioritising the actor's presence on the stage over broader environmental context.

You might also like

Ladies Surrounding a Cart - Utamaro II — Utamaro II
A Party of Merrymakers in a House in the Yoshiwara on a Moonlight Night - Kitagawa Utamaro — Kitagawa Utamaro

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Arashi-Rikan-II-as-Kizu-Kansuke_Poster_CompositorV1_1791680403347.jpg?v=1791681051
