aus-violettem-kern-max-bill
Aus violettem kern - Max Bill

A geometric abstraction by Swiss artist Max Bill, featuring a diamond-shaped composition divided into four distinct, balanced colour fields.

Max Bill was a central figure in the development of Concrete Art, a movement that prioritised mathematical precision and the autonomy of form over representational imagery. His work, Aus violettem kern, demonstrates his rigorous approach to colour theory and spatial organisation. The composition is structured as a diamond, or lozenge, divided into four distinct quadrants of colour. Each section contains a flat, unmodulated hue, avoiding any suggestion of depth or texture. By removing the artist's hand from the surface, Bill allows the viewer to focus entirely on the relationships between the colours themselves.

Bill studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he absorbed the principles of functionalism and rational design. These influences are evident in his later career, where he applied a systematic logic to his paintings and sculptures. He believed that art should be constructed according to mathematical laws, creating a visual language that is universal and objective. In this piece, the interaction between the violet, blue, green, and orange segments creates a balanced tension. The orientation of the canvas, tilted on its corner, further emphasises the geometric nature of the work, challenging traditional notions of how a painting should occupy a wall.

This print captures the precise colour relationships intended by the artist. The lack of brushwork or gestural marks is intentional, reflecting Bill's desire for clarity and order. His work continues to be studied for its contribution to mid-century modernism and its influence on minimalist practices. By stripping away narrative content, Bill invites an engagement with the pure mechanics of vision and the physical properties of colour. This piece is an example of his ability to create complex visual experiences through simple, calculated means.

You might also like

Rhythmische Teilung by Richard Paul Lohse
Torony-Nagy by Victor Vasarely

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Aus-violettem-kern_Poster_CompositorV1_1792118725815.jpg?v=1792142976
