autumn-mountains-li-kui
Autumn Mountains - Li Kui

A classic Northern Song dynasty ink and colour painting on silk, depicting a mountainous scene with figures in a serene, atmospheric setting.

This work, attributed to the Northern Song dynasty painter Li Kui, exemplifies the traditional Chinese approach to mountain imagery. The composition follows a vertical format, common in hanging scrolls of the period, which allows for a tiered progression from the foreground to the distant peaks. The artist employs ink wash techniques to define the contours of the hills, while light colour washes provide a subtle warmth to the terrain.

The foreground features a group of figures, providing a sense of scale against the towering rock formations. The trees are rendered with individualised brushwork, showing a clear distinction between the gnarled trunks and the foliage. The middle ground is obscured by mist, a technique used to create spatial depth and to separate the human activity below from the more remote, elevated areas of the composition. The peaks themselves are rounded, suggesting a softer geological character than the jagged, precipitous mountains often seen in other works of the era.

Li Kui was known for his ability to capture the atmosphere of the natural world through controlled ink application. The brushwork here is precise, with calligraphic lines defining the structure of the rocks and the texture of the bark. The use of negative space, particularly in the areas representing clouds or fog, is essential to the balance of the image. This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the Song period, where the observation of nature was combined with a philosophical approach to the representation of the physical world. The scroll remains a significant example of the ink wash tradition, demonstrating the technical skill required to manage tonal variations on silk. The muted palette ensures that the focus remains on the form and the rhythmic quality of the brushstrokes, rather than on decorative colour.

You might also like

Fisherman's Lodge at Mount Xisai - Li Jie — Li Jie
Song of the Lute - Ding Yunpeng — Ding Yunpeng

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Autumn-Mountains_Poster_CompositorV1_1790790375819.jpg?v=1790796833
