bamboo-and-poem-zhu-lu
Bamboo and Poem - Zhu Lu

A traditional Chinese fan painting by Zhu Lu, featuring elegant ink-wash bamboo and cursive calligraphy on paper.

This fan painting by the Qing Dynasty artist Zhu Lu demonstrates the traditional literati approach to ink wash painting. The work features a branch of bamboo rendered with fluid, calligraphic brushwork, positioned to the right of the composition. The bamboo leaves are executed with varying pressure, creating a sense of movement and natural grace. To the left, a column of cursive script calligraphy balances the visual weight of the foliage. The integration of text and image is a hallmark of the scholar-painter tradition, where the artist expresses personal character through the mastery of the brush.

The choice of the fan format dictates the composition, requiring the artist to work within a curved space. Zhu Lu uses the negative space of the paper to suggest the atmosphere, allowing the ink to breathe. The monochromatic palette relies on the subtle tonal variations of black ink against the aged, warm-toned paper. Several red seal impressions are present, providing a visual counterpoint to the ink and indicating the provenance or ownership of the piece.

Zhu Lu, active during the early 18th century, followed the aesthetic values of the literati, who prioritised individual expression and technical skill over decorative artifice. The bamboo, a symbol of resilience and flexibility in Chinese culture, is a recurring subject in this genre. The artist captures the essence of the plant rather than a literal representation, focusing on the rhythm of the strokes. This print preserves the texture of the original paper and the nuances of the ink application, offering a clear view of the artist's hand. It is a study in restraint and balance, reflecting the philosophical leanings of the era.

You might also like

Bamboo in Snow - Dapeng Zhengkun (Taihō Shōkon) — Dapeng Zhengkun (Taihō Shōkon)
Bamboo in Summer - Takahashi Sōhei — Sōhei

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Bamboo-and-Poem_Poster_CompositorV1_1790990824719.jpg?v=1790992163
