bas-relief-with-putti-charioteers-gabriel-ladame
Bas-relief with Putti Charioteers - Gabriel Ladame

A detailed engraving by Gabriel Ladame depicting a classical frieze of putti charioteers in a rhythmic, antique-inspired procession.

This engraving by Gabriel Ladame depicts a classical frieze featuring a procession of putti engaged in a chariot race. The composition follows the conventions of antique bas-reliefs, where figures are arranged in a linear, rhythmic sequence across a shallow plane. Each chariot is drawn by small horses, with the winged putti acting as charioteers, capturing a sense of movement and playful competition. The scene includes architectural elements and symbolic objects, typical of the decorative motifs found in Roman sarcophagi or architectural friezes.

The artist employs precise line work to define the musculature of the figures and the anatomy of the horses, maintaining a clear distinction between the foreground action and the background. The shading is subtle, relying on fine hatching to suggest volume and depth within the figures, while the overall arrangement remains balanced and orderly. This type of work was often produced to document classical antiquities for collectors and scholars, serving as a visual record of ancient sculptural forms.

As a piece of graphic art, the print reflects the interest in classical motifs that defined the period. The focus on mythological subjects, specifically the use of putti to mimic adult activities, provides a lighthearted take on traditional heroic themes. The surrounding margins of the paper, complete with handwritten annotations and page numbering, indicate that this print originated from a larger bound volume or catalogue of engravings. It is a fine example of the technical skill required to translate three-dimensional stone carving into the two-dimensional medium of the copperplate engraving, preserving the proportions and spirit of the original relief for a wider audience.

You might also like

Neo-classical Vases in a Landscape - Jean Charles Delafosse — Jean Charles Delafosse
A Grecian Lovely - John William Godward — John William Godward

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Bas-relief-with-Putti-Charioteers_Poster_CompositorV1_1791777075686.jpg?v=1791777434
