brocaded-sea-of-peach-blossom-waves-lu-zhi
Brocaded Sea of Peach Blossom Waves - Lu Zhi

A refined Ming Dynasty fan painting by Lu Zhi, featuring delicate peach blossoms and a mountain pavilion on gold-flecked paper.

Lu Zhi, a scholar-painter active during the Ming Dynasty, produced this fan painting on gold-flecked paper. The work reflects the aesthetic preferences of the Wu School, which prioritised a refined, poetic approach to natural subjects. The composition follows the traditional fan format, requiring the artist to arrange elements along a curved axis.

In this scene, jagged rock formations rise from the base, rendered with light washes of blue and green mineral pigments. These forms contrast with the warm, metallic ground of the paper. Small, delicate peach trees are scattered among the crags, their blossoms suggested by subtle touches of pigment. A small pavilion, situated near the centre, provides a human element, offering a place for quiet contemplation. The brushwork is precise and controlled, characteristic of Lu Zhi's style, which often combined meticulous detail with a sense of atmospheric distance.

Calligraphy in the upper left corner provides context for the scene, integrating text with the visual elements. The use of gold-flecked paper was a popular choice for fan paintings, as it provided a luxurious surface that caught the light, adding a sense of depth to the ink and colour. The overall effect is one of balance and restraint, typical of the literati tradition where the artist sought to express personal cultivation through the depiction of nature. This piece demonstrates the technical skill required to maintain harmony within the constraints of the fan shape, ensuring that the eye moves naturally across the composition from the foreground structures to the distant peaks.

You might also like

Gentlewomen - Hu Xigui — Hu Xigui
Peony - Zhao Zhiqian — Zhao Zhiqian

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Brocaded-Sea-of-Peach-Blossom-Waves_Poster_CompositorV1_1790799122160.jpg?v=1790804877
