It depicts Caliban, the complex figure from William Shakespeare's play, The Tempest. Marc employs a fractured, angular aesthetic that reflects the influence of Cubism and Futurism, yet he retains the emotional intensity characteristic of German Expressionism. The figure of Caliban is rendered through sharp, geometric planes and a palette of deep purples, yellows, and muted greens.

The composition conveys a sense of agitation and primal energy. The distorted limbs and the mask-like face suggest the internal turmoil of the character, who is often interpreted as a symbol of the untamed natural world in conflict with civilisation. Marc uses colour not for descriptive accuracy, but to evoke the psychological state of the subject. The heavy, dark outlines define the figure against a background of lighter, more fluid washes, creating a tension between the solid form and the surrounding space.

This piece demonstrates Marc's interest in the intersection of literature and visual art. By choosing a character defined by his isolation and perceived monstrosity, Marc explores themes of alienation and the raw, unrefined spirit. The work avoids traditional portraiture, opting instead for a symbolic representation that prioritises the subjective experience of the artist. The interplay of light and shadow, combined with the aggressive posture of the figure, captures the volatile nature of the Shakespearean character. This print offers a clear view of Marc's technical approach to watercolour, showing how he layered pigment to achieve depth and texture within a flattened, modern pictorial space.

You might also like

The Beautiful Heavy Breasts by Jean Dubuffet
Les Trois Graces by Henri Michaux

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Caliban-from-Shakespeare-s-The-Tempest-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792121728159.jpg?v=1792205358
