calligraphique-antoni-tapies
Calligraphique - Antoni Tàpies

A powerful abstract lithograph by Antoni Tàpies, featuring bold, gestural brushwork and expressive, calligraphic marks.

Antoni Tàpies, a central figure in the Spanish Informel movement, produced works that often blur the boundary between painting and physical matter. Calligraphique demonstrates his characteristic approach to mark-making, where the act of creation is as significant as the final image. The composition is dominated by bold, gestural strokes that evoke the fluidity of ink on paper, yet retain a raw, tactile quality associated with his broader practice.

The work features a series of sweeping, dark forms set against a lighter ground. Tàpies employs a variety of techniques, including dense, scribbled hatching and broad, sweeping brushwork that suggests a rhythmic, almost meditative process. The contrast between the heavy, opaque black shapes and the lighter, more delicate linear elements creates a sense of spatial tension. Splatters and drips are present, adding an element of chance to the structured composition. This piece reflects the artist's interest in the expressive potential of signs and symbols, which he often drew from his own subconscious and the cultural history of Catalonia.

Throughout his career, Tàpies explored the materiality of his medium, often incorporating sand, marble dust, or other substances into his canvases. In this lithographic work, he translates that interest into a two-dimensional format, using the density of the ink to mimic the weight of his textured paintings. The result is a work that feels both immediate and ancient, inviting the viewer to engage with the physical presence of the marks. It is a clear example of his ability to communicate through a personal vocabulary of abstract forms, avoiding literal representation in favour of a more direct, visceral experience. The work remains a representative example of his mid-to-late career output, where his mastery of line and space reached a high degree of refinement.

You might also like

Untitled (T1989-A3) by Hans Hartung
Annunciation by Martin Kline
Antoni Tàpies artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Calligraphique_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125447938.jpg?v=1792294633
