cat-ink-and-colour-on-paper-wang-li
Cat (Ink and Colour on Paper) - Wang Li

A traditional Chinese ink-wash painting of a cat perched on a rock, accompanied by elegant calligraphy.

This hanging scroll depicts a cat perched upon a rock, rendered in the traditional Chinese ink-wash style. Wang Li, a scholar-painter active during the Qing Dynasty, employs a restrained palette to focus on the form and posture of the animal. The cat is shown from behind, its head turned upwards, suggesting an attentive or curious gaze directed toward an unseen subject. The artist uses subtle washes of ink to define the fur, while darker, more concentrated strokes delineate the ears, tail, and the texture of the rock beneath the creature.

The upper portion of the scroll is occupied by a substantial inscription in calligraphy. This text provides a literary context for the image, a common practice in Chinese literati painting where the visual and the textual are integrated to form a unified work. The calligraphy is executed with fluid, confident strokes, demonstrating the artist's mastery of the brush. The balance between the negative space of the paper and the density of the ink creates a sense of quietude.

Wang Li was known for his ability to capture the essence of his subjects through minimal means. In this work, the cat is not merely a decorative element but a study in observation. The composition follows the vertical format typical of hanging scrolls, guiding the viewer from the detailed calligraphy at the top down to the grounded figure of the cat. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece. This print captures the nuances of the original ink application, preserving the tonal variations and the expressive quality of the brushwork. It is a representative example of the literati tradition, where technical skill is secondary to the expression of the artist's internal state and their engagement with the natural world.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Nomads Hunting with Falcons - Chen Juzhong — Chen Juzhong

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Cat-Ink-and-Colour-on-Paper-_Poster_CompositorV1_1790811389190.jpg?v=1790812777
