The composition is framed within an arched niche, suggesting it was intended as a design for a decorative relief or architectural sculpture. The central shield bears the inscription 'FELICITAS PUBLICA', a Latin phrase meaning 'public happiness', accompanied by a depiction of a cornucopia or similar botanical emblem. This iconography reflects the period's interest in classical allegory and civic virtue.

Cootwijck employs a delicate use of pen and ink, supplemented by grey wash to create a sense of three-dimensional volume. The figures are rendered with soft, rounded forms typical of the Rococo style, which favoured grace and lightness over the heavier dramatic contrasts of the preceding Baroque era. The cherubs are positioned in a balanced arrangement, their bodies angled to guide the viewer's eye toward the central emblem. The wash technique provides subtle transitions between light and shadow, giving the figures a sculptural quality that suggests they are carved from stone or plaster.

As a draughtsman, Cootwijck demonstrates a clear command of anatomical proportion and spatial depth. The work is contained within a simple border, reinforcing its status as a preparatory study for a larger decorative project. The muted palette of sepia and grey tones is characteristic of eighteenth-century Dutch works on paper, where the focus remains on the fluidity of line and the modulation of tone. This print captures the refined aesthetic of the mid-eighteenth century, offering a glimpse into the collaborative process between artists and craftsmen in the production of civic ornamentation.

You might also like

Apotheosis of Hercules - Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo — Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo
Herders in a Landscape - Jacques-Philippe Le Bas — Jacques-Philippe Le Bas

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Cherubijnen-met-een-wapenschild_Poster_CompositorV1_1791869597422.jpg?v=1791870012
