The work features large, bold Chinese characters rendered in black ink against a neutral paper background, framed by the characteristic gold leaf borders of traditional Japanese screen painting. The composition balances the weight of the primary characters with smaller, more fluid Waka poems inscribed below, creating a dialogue between different scripts and literary forms.

Horie Yorinao was a scholar and calligrapher active during the late Edo period. His approach to the brush demonstrates a command of both the rigid, structured nature of Chinese characters and the cursive, rhythmic flow of Japanese kana. The ink application varies from thick, saturated strokes to dry, wispy lines, showing the physical movement of the artist's hand. The gold leaf panels provide a reflective surface that contrasts with the matte texture of the paper, a common technique in Japanese interior design intended to brighten dimly lit rooms.

This piece functions as both a literary document and a visual object. The juxtaposition of the monumental characters with the delicate, smaller script requires the viewer to engage with the screen at different distances. From afar, the bold shapes dominate the visual field. Upon closer inspection, the smaller Waka poems reveal themselves, inviting a slower, more meditative reading experience. The screen is a representative example of the scholarly tradition in Japan, where the practice of calligraphy was considered a discipline of the mind as much as an artistic pursuit. The preservation of the paper and the integrity of the ink strokes offer a clear view into the aesthetic values of the mid-nineteenth century, where the integration of text and decorative arts was a standard feature of high-status interiors.

You might also like

Chinese Poem Extolling a Reclusive Lifestyle - Jakugon Taijō — Jakugon Taijō
Chinese Poem Lamenting the Death of a Friend - Ryōkan Taigu — Ryōkan Taigu

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Chinese-Characters-in-Various-Scripts-and-Waka-Poems_Poster_CompositorV1_1791680392650.jpg?v=1791681258
https://www.solisprints.com/products/chinese-characters-in-various-scripts-and-waka-poems-horie-yorinao-togen
