These prints were typically distributed among friends and associates to commemorate special occasions or literary gatherings. The subject depicts a woman engaged in the act of writing, a common motif in surimono that celebrates the intellectual pursuits of the literati.

The composition features a woman seated at a low table, her posture focused as she holds a brush to paper. Her attire is decorated with a repeating bird motif, rendered in a muted palette that contrasts with the soft yellow background. The table holds the necessary tools for calligraphy, including an inkstone and a stack of paper. The surrounding border displays a geometric pattern of stylised flowers, which frames the central scene and provides a sense of balance to the overall design.

Gakutei was a student of Hokusai and became known for his refined technique and attention to detail. His work often incorporates subtle colour gradients and precise line work, which are evident in this piece. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy within the print serves as both a decorative element and a record of the poem being composed. This print reflects the cultural values of the time, where artistic skill and literary knowledge were highly regarded. The use of woodblock printing techniques allows for a clean, graphic quality that remains clear and legible. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the Japanese elite during the early nineteenth century, showcasing the technical mastery required to produce such delicate works on paper.

You might also like

Collected Thirty-six Kyōka Poets - Totoya Hokkei by Hokkei
Illustrated Books and an Incense Burner by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Chinese-Lady-Seated-at-a-Table-Composing-an-Ode_Poster_CompositorV1_1791939565033.jpg?v=1791947722
