Produced in 1960, this work reflects the artist's interest in the spatial qualities of the white page. Francis often left large areas of the paper surface untouched, allowing the negative space to function as an active element within the composition.

The print features a stark, expansive white centre framed by gestural marks. Along the upper edge, a band of red pigment appears to bleed into the paper, suggesting a sense of fluidity and movement. To the right, a vertical stroke of blue-green provides a sharp contrast, while smaller droplets and splatters of paint are scattered near the edges. These marks demonstrate the artist's technique of layering colour to create a sense of depth without relying on traditional perspective.

Francis spent significant time in Paris and Tokyo, and his work often synthesises Western gestural painting with Eastern aesthetic principles regarding emptiness and balance. In this piece, the interaction between the saturated colour and the void of the paper creates a tension that defines the visual experience. The lithographic process allows for the subtle textures of the ink to remain visible, capturing the spontaneity of the original application. This print is a clear example of the artist's mature style, where the economy of means is used to achieve a specific atmospheric effect. The composition avoids centralisation, instead pushing the visual interest toward the periphery, which invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the marks and the surrounding space.

You might also like

Blue Territory by Joan Mitchell
Camino Real (IV) by Cy Twombly

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Chinese-Wall_Poster_CompositorV1_1792119050754.jpg?v=1792143709
