The composition features a woman standing by the riverbank, her posture suggesting the act of washing cloth, a common motif in depictions of this specific site. Beside her sits a wooden tub containing fabric, while a willow tree frames the left side of the image. The background is kept minimal, with simple outlines of distant mountains, allowing the focus to remain on the figure and the poetic atmosphere of the river.

Rekisentei Eiri was active during the late eighteenth century and is recognised for his contributions to the ukiyo-e genre, particularly his bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. His work often incorporates elements of the floating world, blending human subjects with natural settings. The print utilises a restrained colour palette, typical of the period, which relies on soft earth tones and subtle washes to convey the serenity of the riverbank. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper right quadrant provides a literary context, linking the visual representation to the cultural history of the Tamagawa river. The lines are delicate, reflecting the technical precision required in woodblock printing during this era. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the intersection of nature, daily labour, and classical literature formed a cohesive visual language. The print is a fine example of the period's approach to composition, where negative space is used to balance the figure and the surrounding environment, creating a sense of quietude and reflection.

You might also like

Ladies Surrounding a Cart - Utamaro II — Utamaro II
A Party of Merrymakers in a House in the Yoshiwara on a Moonlight Night - Kitagawa Utamaro — Kitagawa Utamaro

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Chofu-Tamagawa-Province-of-Musashi_Poster_CompositorV1_1791762586176.jpg?v=1791766907
