The work depicts Christ standing upon a raised platform, his hands raised in a gesture of address, surrounded by a diverse crowd of listeners. The composition is structured around the central figure of Christ, whose presence is defined by a subtle halo and the surrounding light, which contrasts with the deeper shadows of the interior space.

The etching demonstrates the artist's technical command of line and tone. Rembrandt uses varying densities of hatching and cross-hatching to create a sense of volume and atmosphere. The figures in the foreground are rendered with particular attention to their individual expressions and postures, ranging from the attentive seated listeners to the children playing on the ground. The background remains partially obscured, suggesting a depth that draws the viewer into the scene without overwhelming the primary narrative focus.

This print earned its nickname, La petite tombe, from the tomb-like structure visible in the background, which appears in early impressions of the work. It remains a primary example of Rembrandt's ability to imbue biblical subjects with a sense of human immediacy and psychological weight. The artist avoids idealised forms, opting instead for a grounded, realistic portrayal of the figures. This approach allows the viewer to engage with the scene as a moment of quiet, human interaction rather than a purely formal religious icon. The print is a fine example of the artist's mature style, where the interplay between light and shadow serves to organise the complex arrangement of figures within the frame.

<div
