cicada-on-a-grapevine-bokurin-guan
Cicada on a Grapevine - Bokurin Guan

A traditional Japanese ink wash painting on silk, depicting a cicada resting on a grapevine, rendered with delicate brushwork and subtle tonal variations.

This hanging scroll, attributed to the Japanese artist Bokurin Guan, exemplifies the ink wash tradition of the Muromachi period. The composition features a single cicada clinging to a trailing grapevine, rendered with a focus on negative space and the economy of brushwork. The artist employs varying densities of ink to suggest the weight of the grape clusters and the delicate structure of the vine tendrils. The cicada, positioned centrally, acts as the primary subject, its form defined by precise, controlled lines that contrast with the softer, blurred washes used for the foliage.

The work adheres to the aesthetic principles of the time, where the interaction between the subject and the surrounding void is as important as the physical representation of the objects themselves. The muted palette, dominated by shades of sepia and charcoal, reflects the monochromatic focus of traditional East Asian ink painting. The silk support provides a subtle texture that interacts with the ink, allowing for soft transitions in tone. The mounting, which features a patterned blue border, frames the work in a manner consistent with historical display practices for hanging scrolls.

Bokurin Guan captures a fleeting moment in nature, a common theme in Kacho-ga (bird and flower painting). The stillness of the cicada against the hanging vine suggests a quiet observation of the natural world. The work is devoid of unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the essential form and movement of the vine. This approach invites the viewer to consider the balance between the organic growth of the plant and the singular presence of the insect. The seals present on the lower right corner provide historical context, identifying the artist and the provenance of the piece within the tradition of ink painting.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Crown on a Table, Lacquer Tray with Young Pine and Fan - Ryūryūkyo Shinsai — Ryūryūkyo Shinsai

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Cicada-on-a-Grapevine_Poster_CompositorV1_1791343121766.jpg?v=1791345621
