This lithograph, titled Civil Rehabilitation and Military Execution, captures a sombre moment of state-sanctioned violence. Steinlen, known for his work in journals such as Le Rire and Gil Blas, often used his art to critique the rigid structures of the military and the legal system.

The composition is stark and deliberate. A young man stands bound to a post in the foreground, his expression one of resignation or shock. Behind him, a military officer signals the firing squad, which is depicted as a dense, faceless mass of soldiers. The contrast between the solitary figure and the collective power of the state is the primary focus of the work. Steinlen uses soft, grainy charcoal-like textures typical of his lithographic style to create a sense of atmosphere, while the negative space around the figures draws the eye directly to the central narrative.

This piece reflects the artist's interest in the plight of the individual against institutional authority. Unlike his more decorative posters or depictions of Parisian street life, this work is stripped of ornamentation. It functions as a direct commentary on the harsh realities of military discipline. The artist's signature is visible on the left, grounding the scene in his specific graphic style. The work remains a clear example of how print media was used to disseminate political dissent and humanitarian concern during the early twentieth century. By focusing on the human cost of these events, Steinlen invites the viewer to consider the morality of the scene rather than merely observing the historical event itself.

You might also like

Dood of vrij, decoratie in de Beurssteeg te Amsterdam -
