The composition features a male pheasant in the foreground, his plumage rendered with careful attention to the iridescent blues and coppers of the neck and back. Beside him, two female pheasants remain partially obscured by the grasses, their mottled brown feathers providing camouflage against the woodland floor.

Thorburn utilised a light, controlled wash technique to capture the atmosphere of the British countryside. The background recedes into a soft, hazy distance, suggesting a cool autumn day. The birch trees to the left frame the scene, while the open space to the right draws the eye toward the horizon. His approach to ornithological illustration prioritised accuracy in form and posture, a result of his extensive field studies and his work for various natural history publications.

This work demonstrates the artist's ability to balance scientific observation with a composed, aesthetic arrangement. The birds are positioned to show both the distinct sexual dimorphism of the species and their natural behaviour in a woodland habitat. Thorburn avoided overly dramatic staging, preferring to document the quiet reality of the birds in their environment. The palette remains grounded in natural earth tones, with the exception of the bright red caruncles around the cock pheasant's eye, which provide a sharp visual contrast. This print captures the technical skill and observational rigour that defined Thorburn's career as one of the most respected wildlife painters of the early twentieth century.

You might also like

Pheasant Display by Charles Tunnicliffe
Vier fazanten (Four Pheasants) by Jan van Essen

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Cock-and-Hen-Pheasant-at-the-Edge-of-a-Wood_Poster_CompositorV1_1792114946717.jpg?v=1792135932
