Johan Zoffany, a German painter active in Britain, travelled to India in 1783. This work captures a specific event involving British East India Company officials and the court of the Nawab of Oudh, Asaf-ud-Daula. The scene is set under a large canopy, providing a shaded area for the spectators who surround the central cockfight.

The composition is crowded, reflecting the social complexity of the colonial encounter. Zoffany includes numerous portraits of identifiable figures, such as Colonel John Mordaunt, who is shown in a white coat. The figures are arranged in a dense, theatrical manner, typical of Zoffany's conversation pieces. The interaction between the British officers and the Indian courtiers is presented with a focus on gesture and costume, documenting the cultural exchange and the specific social hierarchies of the period.

Technically, the painting demonstrates Zoffany's attention to detail in the rendering of textiles, uniforms, and the varied expressions of the crowd. The lighting is filtered through the canopy, creating soft shadows across the figures. The work serves as a record of the activities of the British in India, capturing the atmosphere of the Nawab's court. The original painting is a notable example of the genre of colonial history painting, documenting the intersection of European and Indian social customs. It provides a visual account of the interactions between the British expatriate community and the local aristocracy, framed within the conventions of eighteenth-century portraiture and genre painting.

You might also like

Erasistratus the Physician Discovers the Love of Antiochus for Stratonice by Benjamin West
Jephthah by John Everett Millais

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Colonel-Mordaunt-s-Cockfight_Poster_CompositorV1_1792115507640.jpg?v=1792395375
