As a founding member of the CoBrA movement, Jorn rejected rigid academic structures in favour of an approach rooted in intuition, folklore, and the subconscious. This piece demonstrates his mastery of printmaking techniques, specifically the interplay between etched lines and aquatint tonal areas.

The composition is dominated by a dense web of dark, calligraphic lines that seem to emerge from and recede into a textured, sepia-toned ground. These marks possess a frantic quality, suggesting a rapid, physical engagement with the copper plate. Rather than depicting a recognisable subject, the work focuses on the tension between the chaotic linear network and the atmospheric depth created by the aquatint. The result is a visual field that feels both immediate and layered, inviting the viewer to trace the movement of the artist's hand across the surface.

Jorn's work from this era often sought to bridge the gap between abstraction and figuration, frequently hinting at distorted, mask-like forms within the tangle of lines. In this specific print, the viewer may perceive suggestions of a face or a figure, yet these shapes remain elusive, dissolving back into pure gesture. The monochromatic palette, ranging from deep umber to lighter, washed-out tones, provides a sense of cohesion to the otherwise frenetic energy of the marks. This print is a clear example of Jorn's ability to balance technical control with an aesthetic of unrestrained expression, reflecting his broader interest in the primal and the unrefined in modern art.

You might also like

Movement in Red by John Marin
Untitled (T1955-23) by Hans Hartung
Asger Jorn prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Composition_Poster_CompositorV1_1792116503538.jpg?v=1792396060
