This work reflects her development of Rayonism, a style she co-founded with Mikhail Larionov. Rayonism focused on the depiction of light rays reflected from objects, rather than the objects themselves. The composition is built upon intersecting planes and geometric forms that suggest a sense of movement and energy.

The visual structure relies on a stark contrast between the deep, cool tones of the blue and grey angular shapes and the warm, luminous sphere positioned near the top. This circular form acts as a source of light, casting rays that define the surrounding space. The sharp, faceted surfaces create a sense of depth, yet the overall arrangement remains focused on the interaction of light and colour. By breaking down the subject into these abstract components, Goncharova moves away from traditional representation, favouring a dynamic interplay of form.

Her work during this period often explored the intersection of Cubist structure and Futurist speed. This piece demonstrates her technical precision, using a controlled palette to guide the viewer through the geometric arrangement. The absence of figurative elements allows the focus to remain entirely on the spatial relationships between the shapes. It is a clear example of the experimental spirit that defined the Russian avant-garde before the First World War, where artists sought to create a new visual language that could capture the rapid changes of the modern era. The print captures the texture of the original brushwork, maintaining the tension between the dark, heavy forms and the bright, central light source.

You might also like

Spatial Force Construction by Lyubov Popova
Suprematistic composition (Feeling of a mystic wave out of the cosmos) by Kazimir Malevich

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Composition_Poster_CompositorV1_1792115606457.jpg?v=1792136929
