Landseer, widely recognised for his technical proficiency in depicting animals, frequently engaged with the Old Masters to refine his understanding of anatomy and movement. By copying Rubens, he explored the dramatic energy and complex spatial arrangements characteristic of the Flemish Baroque tradition.

The scene depicts a chaotic hunt, featuring horses, hounds, and wild animals in a state of physical struggle. Landseer captures the muscular tension of the horses and the aggressive postures of the wolves and foxes with precision. The composition is dense, with figures overlapping to create a sense of immediate, violent action. The sky is rendered with sweeping, atmospheric brushwork, providing a contrast to the grounded, visceral nature of the hunt below.

Landseer's approach to this copy demonstrates his interest in the narrative potential of animal subjects. While he maintains the spirit of the original Rubens, his own hand is visible in the handling of the fur textures and the specific expressions of the hounds. This piece offers a view into the training methods of a nineteenth-century artist, showing how historical study informed the development of his own style. The palette remains grounded in earthy tones, punctuated by the white of the lead horse and the muted reds of the hunters' attire. It is a study of motion and conflict, reflecting the artist's lifelong fascination with the natural world and its untamed elements.

You might also like

Copy after Rubens's Wolf and Fox Hunt - Sir Edwin Henry Landseer by Edwin Landseer
The Bear Hunt by Paulus Potter

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Copy-after-Rubens-s-Wolf-and-Fox-Hunt_Poster_CompositorV1_1792119402300.jpg?v=1792195685
